Welcome to the Riverview Middle School Music Department. Below you will find Music course descriptions for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.

BAND/CADET (004450) 

Students with no prior experience are welcome. Students with  experience on a band instrument (woodwind, brass, percussion) are encouraged to  continue playing in this beginning level ensemble. Students will receive instrumental  instruction and develop music literacy, overall musicianship skills, and a sense of  responsibility to a performing ensemble. Students perform in at least three concerts  throughout the year. Band instruments include; Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet,  Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Baritone Horn, Bass Guitar,  Percussion. Playing and performing with a musical ensemble is an amazing experience  that helps build self-esteem, confidence and pride in accomplishment. Pleasant Hill  M.S.  

Beginning Band provides the opportunity for interested students to begin playing  one of the following instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or  baritone horn. Students in Beginning Band will be provided instruction with their  newly chosen instrument. It is highly suggested that students provide their own  instrument. There are at least 3 required evening concerts as well as school  assemblies that provide opportunities for performance. Sequoia M.S.  This course is a continuation of growth and development of instrumental skills at an  advanced elementary and beginning intermediate level of performance. Band literature,  music theory and music history at the appropriate level will be studied and performed.  Students are required to participate in the following performances and understand this  is an one year commitment: Winter Concert, Spring Concert and performances at  scheduled festivals. BAND/STRINGS ENSEMBLE (004470) 

Open to 6th grade violin, viola, cello and string bass students. Students are required to  participate in the following performances and understand this is an one year  commitment: Winter Concert, Spring Concert and performances at scheduled festivals. 

 

BAND/ORCHESTRA (I—BEGINNING) (004480) 

Beginning Orchestra provides the opportunity for interested students to begin  playing one of the following string orchestra instruments: violin, viola, cello, or  string bass. Students in Beginning Orchestra will be provided instruction with their  newly chosen instruments. It is highly suggested that students provide their own  instrument. Several evening concerts, school assemblies, and performances provide  opportunities for performance. 

 

BAND/CONCERT (004425)

The Concert Band is open to  woodwind, brass and percussion students with one to two years of playing  experience. The student will continue to build upon skills acquired in the Cadet  Band and will again be exposed to various musical styles found in Band  repertoire. Several performances will be scheduled during the school year.

 

BAND/SYMPHONIC BAND (004445) 

(This course is a continuation of skill development and playing skills. This band performs  at a level suitable for most 7th and 8th grade music students. Students must know B flat,  E flat, G, D, major scales. Students are required to participate in the following  performances and understand this is an one year commitment: Winter Concert, Spring  Concert and performances at scheduled festivals.

 

CHORUS (004500) 

Chorus is a course open to students in grades 6-8. Students will learn proper vocal  techniques and will rehearse and perform choral music of different styles, cultures, and  periods. Performances for school, community, and music festivals are an important part  of the program. This class is designed for all students with or without previous  experience in music and can prepare students for more advanced classes. Students are  required to participate in the following performances and understand this is an one  year commitment: Winter Concert, Spring Concert and performances at scheduled  festivals. 

 

ROTATION 6 

Rotation classes may include Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) and/or Career  Technology Education (CTE) to allow 6 th graders to explore a variety of short-term  courses. Students are placed randomly into Rotation classes and then rotate through a  selection of classes every quarter. Electing music (instrumental or vocal) is their  yearlong elective class with no rotation. *Electing music (instrumental or vocal)  prohibits the Rotation class. Foothill M.S.
